How Does Wearing A Mask Protect Against COVID-19?

In a recent study, published in the prestigious Journal of Emergency Medicine, researchers examined the relationship between breathing difficulty along with using a face mask as a preventative medical treatment. A cloth face mask, a normal medical mask designed to filter out external irritants, such as dust, steam, allergens, smoke, and pollution, is commonly worn above the nose and mouth to prevent exposure to contaminants. Many patients, particularly in emergency and burn components, use a face mask during routine checkups or treatment. Using a medical research study as the basis for their study, researchers have determined that utilizing a cloth face mask might be detrimental to patients’ respiratory health.

Masks that don’t allow for the free flow of atmosphere are inadequate to provide a benefit due to the amount of air that must pass to reach the mouth and nose. Breathable fabrics will reduce the amount of friction and turbulence that could happen in a typical breathing cycle. This will decrease the amount of bacteria that may form inside the nose and mouth, which have consequences for both public health and facial health.

Other elements of masks that have shown positive consequences would be the presence of exhalation valves and occlusion control. Masks that have these two attributes are designed to limit the quantity of time that oxygen passes through the mouth and nose. The addition of a valve will ensure that only a limited amount of oxygen reaches the facial skin, which will in turn reduce the quantity of aggravation experienced by the wearer.
